How It Works

The Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) provides uniform service members equitable housing compensation based on housing costs in local civilian markets.

  • Duty Station: Rates are based on your geographic duty station, not your home of record.
  • Pay Grade & Dependents: Your rank and whether you have dependents determine your specific rate tier.
  • Tax Advantage: BAH is a non-taxable allowance. The tax savings shows how much more you would need to earn in taxable civilian income to take home the same amount (assuming a 22% tax bracket).
